An entry-level, half day course about how to run a miniature traction engine - brought to you by the team at Berrybrook Steam & Classics!
This course is very much based on giving instruction to anyone who owns or is considering purchasing a miniature traction engine and is a tailored half-day of instruction on how to run one.
Usually, the course will be run on a 4” scale traction engine, however we ask you to talk to us beforehand, so we can decide which engine will be best for you. The course is available in scales 4” and 6” with 3” being available under negotiation.
We will run the course in our yard near Exeter where light refreshments will be provided. Whilst we don’t expect to go beyond lunchtime, you are more than welcome to bring you own refreshments, or to head up to the local shop if you wish to have lunch whilst working on the engine. Alternatively, we can recommend several local pubs which serve food in the day for you to visit following the tuition.
The day will begin at 0900hrs and go on to around 1300hrs. We will begin with a safety talk followed by a tour of the engine we will be using. We then light the engine and wait for it to get up to pressure. We will guide you around general maintenance, running and cleaning.
The engine should be in steam by 1000hrs. You will then be given the opportunity to learn how to control and drive the engine in our yard. Around midday, we will begin going through how to shut the engine down to conclude at around 1300hrs (this can overrun).
We aim for this day to be instructional, yet enjoyable. Maximum of 2 people per course.
How to book…
There are two ways of booking the course; either buy a voucher on this page (which will be sent to you in the post) or give us a call on 01392 833301 to organise a date and pay over the phone.
There is no requirement to organise a date prior to purchasing a voucher, usually (where the voucher is intended to be a gift), the recipient of the voucher will give us a call when they are ready to redeem it. Do bear in mind however that we usually need at least a couple of weeks’ notice for either booking option and courses usually run on a Tuesday, Wednesday or a Thursday.
Vouchers are typically valid up to two years from date of issue.

Orders are usually sent to UK buyers using either Parcelforce or Royal Mail on a 48 hour tracked service. It is possible to upgrade to a 24 hour service.
Postage costs to UK addresses are determined by basket total.

Products containing Hexamine (notably, Mamod Waxed Fuel Tablets and Wilesco WiTabs) are now regulated in the United Kingdom and therefore no longer available for purchase by the general public without the correct licence in place. For this reason, both products are available for collection from store only and, at point of collection, can only be supplied to buyers who can produce a valid EPP Licence.

We are unable to supply solid fuel tablets to buyers from overseas.
